Hey! I'm going to a New Members meeting of a local DC burlesque troop this week, mostly because it scares me and I feel like it'll do good things for my self esteem. Any tips for people just getting into it/advice on choosing a good name?

Remember that you’re doing this to have fun. Focus on that. It’s not scary, it’s thrilling, like a roller coaster. You might feel a bit sick, but you’re not gonna die, and you’ll get to do all kinds of amazing cool things. Don’t compare yourself to people who’ve been doing it for a long time. Be prepared. Plan an act, but be willing to listen to critique for how it could be better. Eat proper meals; you’ll need lots of energy. Don’t be afraid to look foolish. Don’t be afraid to look ugly. But mostly, have fun.

You’re not gonna gain self esteem from doing burlesque. That only comes from within. Burlesque girls aren’t confident because they’re doing burlesque. They’re doing burlesque because they’re confident. Which isn’t to say you have to be fully confident when you start out, but know that this self esteem is gonna be found in those introspective moments by yourself more than onstage.

As far as a name goes, be unique. I’ve met so many Bellas and Kittys and Scarlettes and La Rues and St Cyrs and Aphrodites that I truly cannot keep them all straight. Think of a name that describes YOU, not some vague idea of a 1930’s French woman. Check the Burlesquepedia to see how many people share your taste in names. Google it to see if it’s taken. Check tumblr, even. If you want to go anywhere with this as a longterm thing, fans need to be able to find you and remember you. (And girl, while we’re on the subject, you need a new tumblr name. I always get you confused with Jennie Breeden’s comic.)

So, good luck! May you go as far as your rhinestoned heels can take you! <3

I’m debuting a new issue of Comic Stripper at the Michigan Burlesque Festival on September 19th/20th in Detroit, where I’m also performing. It’s all about my experience at last year’s MBF, including events leading up to it. I’ll also have a whole bunch of other goodies. $15 for each day, or $25 gets you a weekend pass. Dozens of performers from around the country. Come check it out!

I’ve made so many comics about my fucking body hair.

I’ve had this shirt idea in my head for a while, and with the Michigan Burlesque Festival coming up, I thought now would be a good time to finally make it. If you want one, preorder it now! Order it by Thursday the 28th and it’ll be cheaper, because you’ll be doing me a favor by helping me estimate how many I need of each size. They’ll ship in September.

My awesome friends are putting on this show and there’s only a couple hours left! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/851629756/pick-a-card-a-burlesque-exploration-of-tarot

This is Super Happy Funtime Burlesque’s first ever studio album, Wet. Unlike the live albums, you can hear every word in crystal clarity and the band is properly mixed. It has songs about food, Santa, necrophilia, penises, diet Pepsi, gay rock stars and more. It’s no secret that I’ve been a fan of this band long before I joined the show. These are some very fun and catchy songs.

The album’s release is well-timed, because the suspension on our tour bus decided to fall apart while we were on tour. We fixed it with duct tape and bungee cords so we could get home, but basically, we can’t go on any tours again until it’s fixed. And I love touring, and meeting so many of you, and doing shows for all you grand people across the country.

So, we need to sell just 100 copies of this to fix the bus. This album, which you were totally going to buy anyway because it’s awesome. Why not buy it now rather than later. You can listen to the album here on bandcamp and also purchase it digitally. You can also buy a physical CD here. Oh, you guys are gonna love it.

For those of you who haven’t been able to make it to my shows to buy my mini comics, great news. They’re now in my online store! See what really goes on in a traveling burlesque show. (Spoiler alert: so. many. smells.)

Feminism is having a wardrobe malfunction.

Does your brand of feminism remove barriers for women, or simply move them around? Does is expand options for women, or does it just shift them? You don’t liberate women by forcing them to choose option B instead of option A. What is comfortable for you might not be comfortable for someone else, and it’s entirely possible that what you see as oppressive, other women find comfortable or even downright liberating.

Before you think the girl in the middle is a strawman, let me tell you I used to be her, back in my misguided youth. I considered myself the standard to which other people should adhere. But that was stupid. It’s not up to me to tell people how to dress, and it’s much nicer to let everyone choose for themselves.

Some women would feel naked without a veil. Some women would find it restrictive. Some women would feel restricted by a bra. Some women would feel naked without one. Some women would feel restricted by a tight corset. Others love them. Some wear lots of clothes with a corset. Some only wear the corset and nothing else. What makes any article of clothing oppressive is someone forcing you to wear it. And it’s just as oppressive to force someone not to wear something that they want to wear.

I’m back on tour, which means more Comic Stripper pages! Full tour schedule here. I have two mini comics, one of which is brand spanking new, and of course my smutty mermaid graphic novel.
Read more Comic Stripper comic strips

I’m not going to be around much for the next couple weeks, since I’ll be spreading joy to Floridians while trying to figure out how to actually steal sunshine. (Perhaps a review of Len’s discography is in order.)
But I’ll be running tour diary comics on my burlesque tumblr on every day that we have a show! They were drawn a while ago, from a tour we did almost a year ago. I have about 250 pages worth of these comics sketched, and making more all the time.

I promise you there’s nothing better you could be doing this weekend than coming to our show called “Ass Tits Brains and Vagina!” We have been working hard on the new show and we’re really proud of it. We got Tom Waits the actual man a song inspired by Tom Waits. You like rap? Mr Happy Pants pretends he knows what he’s doing with a Beastie Boys cover. And more.
