Concept art for my next burlesque act. I’m a mermaid and Lala is gonna be the sea witch. It’s loosely based on my webcomic Darlin’ It’s Betta Down Where It’s Wetta. The sond that goes along with it is the one that made me laugh so hard I barfed.
I’ve actually already designed a mermaid burlesque outfit AND an octomaid costume for the 30 day monster girl challenge, but I kind of half-assed both of those, and it figures that I would be needing both of those. So I had to come up with a more wearable concept for each. A photo of the mermaid dress is here. Tonight I’m making the tentacle skirt.
Geez what did I do before I started sewing? I’m so excited for this. Come see it February 22 in Grand Rapids, MI; and February 23 in Traverse City, MI
Insect (30 Day Monster Girl (Burlesque) Challenge Day 13)
In retrospect, the aerial silk could have been great for the spider girl, but I figured a flying insect would also do well in the air (though those wings would make this impractical). I’m always astounded by people who can do this. Insect girl has a corset made of iridescent material that looks like an insect’s body, and compound eye sunglasses. I’m really fond of how this one came out.
Zombie (30 Day Monster Girl (Burlesque) Challenge Day 12)
I was thinking a corset that references a ribcage, and a zombie-skin bodysuit that can be ripped off revealing skin painted like muscles. There are so many zombie songs she could dance to. I can’t pick a favorite. Maybe some slower psychobilly.
True Monster (30 Day Monster Girl (Burlesque) Challenge Day 11)
Back in the saddle with the monster girl burlesque. Day 11 is “true monster” which nobody seems to know how to interpret. The more open things are, the more afraid and vulnerable I feel, naked and cold, whimpering to myself and slowly rocking back and forth. So, I guess eyeballs and claws and horns. This monster lady will eat your soul, but only if she can see you.
Demon (30 Day Monster Girl (Burlesque) Challenge Day 9)
I’ve seen some demon burlesque before. I’ve seen the Devil himself in a leather codpiece fighting Santa Claus. So I tried to put them from my mind and do my own spin on it. She was supposed to have red-orange body paint, but against the red-orange background, it just looks like a deep fake tan. Oh well. Learning experience!
Octomaid (30 Day Monster Girl (Burlesque) Challenge Day 8)
This one I really struggled with. I must’ve done a dozen sketches and finally made myself just pick one and finish it because I want to actually finish a challenge like this, and they’re not all gonna be peaches and cream and sometimes you have to force yourself so you can proceed to the next thing. Otherwise, I knew I’d get distracted and never proceed.
Anyway, this was inspired by a look Sharon Needles from RuPaul’s Drag Race wore in one episode, these tentacle fingerey things. Also, I’m not sure if “octomaid” means some kind of maid outfit, so I put a little hat on top of the octopus hair. This whole thing is a bit of a mess, but now I can move on.
Plant Girl (30 Day Monster Girl (Burlesque) Challenge Day 7)
Last week I said snakes were nature’s burlesque dancers with their skin shedding, but trees are kind of the same way with their leaves dropping. See, burlesque is completely natural!
This is a variation of a fan dance, but with tree branches that slowly lose their leaves over the course of the dance. It would be a pretty stationary dance as far as legs go. She’s pretty rooted to the ground in that skirt.
Spider Girl (30 Day Monster Girl (Burlesque) Challenge Day 6)
Well, how else would you get a spider girl? :P All these creatures with unorthodox number of limbs make for interesting challenges interpreting these as feasible burlesque costumes. This would be really heavy unless you made the fake legs out of paper mache. Aaaaand now I want to make a giant ruffley bustle.
Mermaid (30 Day Monster Girl (Burlesque) Challenge Day 5)
Stop the presses, Megan drew a mermaid! This never happens, ever, except for all those thousands of times when it does. So yeah, mermaids aren’t much of a challenge for me at this point, though it was still fun drawing this.
