Sometimes I just think about how glad I am that webcomics weren’t a huge big deal when I started drawing them. I was a dumb kid, and my plots contained a lot of misguided ideas about things, and the way the current internet would have reacted to them, I imagine things would have been way too harsh. Nobody would look at my work and think “This person is 15 and has the potential to grow up and learn and figure things out and get better.” I feel like it would be a lot of very angry messages bitching me out for not knowing things, things I hadn’t yet had a chance to learn. The way the webcomics scene was when I was starting, I did a bunch of dumb comics and got largely ignored, and got to hone my skills in obscurity, without anyone screaming that I should die.

And while I have a thick skin now, I didn’t back then. If the internet had been like it is now back then, it would have torn me apart and I would have given up, and you guys wouldn’t get to read any of my comics, aside from those first few horrible experimental ones. I would have thought that comics were an impossible thing to do, and I would have gone into biology instead.

I know some people who think that those without thick skin shouldn’t do art. I think we miss out on a lot of cool art by insisting that only people of a certain high mental constitution are allowed to be artists.

I’m not saying we should say bad art or bad ideas are good when they aren’t. I’m not saying we should coddle artists or give them more credit than they deserve. But I think it’s a good idea to maybe rethink the urge to smack them down, especially if they’re young. We all fuck up when we’re young, and most of us over the age of 20 got to do it in relative privacy.

Just think of all the art we lose out on by demanding an impossible level of perfection from potential artists. Just think about that.
