Oh my god our teacher gave this to us a few years ago and then officially banned “said” from all of our stories in her class. Yep.

Changing up words is good but using a different synonym for “said” each time can actually be kinda jarring. Use this list wisely.

What Nope said. Don’t be like 18 year old me and yank out a thesaurus for every other word in your writing.

What was it someone said? If you have to use a thesaurus to find a word to use, that isn’t the word you should use.

“Said” works. You’re not going to impress anyone, you’re not going to make it better. You’re there to tell the story. Tell it with efficiency, give the details that need to be given and, with exception, very little else. Occasionally these can be fun to mix things up, but keep in mind that if you find yourself typing “said” words a lot, it probably means you’re not letting your characters just talk. Get out of their way; your audience is pretty smart, they can follow the exchange if you write it well and sensibly.

repeating said 1000x is really boring though - asked it nice, or argued, protested, basic words, nothing like “extrapolated”, you know?

(But seriously, using only “said” or never using “said” are both gonna make for some wonky writing and maybe mix it up occasionally but be smart about which words you use and when. But duh, that’s the whole job of being a writer anyway.)
