I actually just decreased how much I’m going to update it. For a few reasons.
1: It was never intended to be a page-by-page kind of comic, and was always intended to be a chapter-by-chapter comic. The story flows better that way, makes more sense that way, and is more enjoyable that way. While polls showed more people wanted page-by-page updates, the actual feedback and critiques I got were overwhelmingly in favor of chapter-by-chapter updates. Readership decreased dramatically when I went to page-by-page updates, which seems backwards but I think everybody could tell it wasn’t working well, even if they liked the more frequent updates.
2: It was driving me crazy to write it page by page. Because it wasn’t supposed to be like that. I had all these jokes written far in advance that no longer worked in this format, so I was having to rewrite everything and mash my head into the keyboard and cry and lay on my bed in sweatpants. In short, it became no longer fun. And if I wanted to force myself to draw things I hated on a schedule I hated, I wouldn’t have quit my old day job.
3: I don’t make any money off it. I wish I was making money off it, but aside from books, I’m not entirely sure how to merchandise this one like I did with the other comics. And I really need to focus on paying work right now. I put Meaty Yogurt at the tippy top of my priority list for over a year, and made $0 off it, and slacked off on things that could pay my mortgage, and I can’t really afford to do that anymore. I gotta be responsible.
But I’m not quitting it. On the site now is a progress bar that shows an approximation of when the next chapter will go up, and there’s a tumblr for it and an RSS so people can know when to check back. There are enough other webcomics that do this that I know it can work, so I’m feeling good about this.
I’m really happy people like this comic. I really like it, too, when I can do it on my terms. I want to make it the best it can be, so I made these changes to make it better.
